The Homemade Mama: Weaving Faith, Family, and Handmade Art

The Homemade Mama

There’s something special about supporting a business that’s not just handmade, but heart-made; that’s exactly what you’ll find in The Homemade Mama, a beautiful small business run by creative mama, Allie Douglas. She’s not just making things, she’s weaving faith, love, and resilience into everything she creates.

Meet Allie: Creator, Mama, Believer

Allie has always had a creative spark. Before becoming a mom, she studied cosmetology and even ran her own salon for a few years. But her path shifted dramatically when she and her husband, a middle and high school English teacher, were blessed with their first son, Jonah, after four long years of infertility.

From early in the pregnancy, doctors offered difficult options after discovering complications in Jonah’s anatomy scans. But Allie and her husband leaned fully into their faith and chose life again and again. Amen to that! Jonah was born full term, weighing just 5 pounds, and spent time in the NICU before coming home on oxygen. He was diagnosed with agenesis of the corpus callosum which is a condition that affects the part of the brain connecting its two hemispheres.

Doctors couldn’t predict how this would affect him, but Allie and her husband knew one thing: she would stay home to care for him. And while living on a single income wasn’t easy, Allie still needed a creative outlet.

From Hobby to Handmade Business

Scrolling online one day, Allie noticed personalized embroidered hats and accessories; items she loved but couldn’t justify buying at the time. So, she took matters into her own hands, literally. She stitched her first hat with thrifted materials, and the response from friends and church family was instant. What began as thoughtful gifts soon blossomed into a small collection of handmade goods.

Then she discovered macramé, and things just clicked. The muscle memory of braiding hair from her cosmetology days made learning this new craft feel natural. During Jonah’s nap times, Allie started knotting intricate designs, turning quiet moments into something beautiful.

Eventually, her collection grew too large to keep to herself. She signed up for a vendor event and, to her surprise, did incredibly well. That’s when The Homemade Mama was born and named for exactly who she is and what she does.

Faith First

What stands out most about Allie’s journey is how rooted it is in her faith. She created her Facebook and Etsy pages to share her work and bring in a little extra income, but every piece she makes is made prayerfully and purposefully.

Today, Jonah is thriving. He just had a birthday in June and is a little miracle; curious, bright, and full of life. Allie and her husband also welcomed their second son, Daniel, and she continues to balance life as a full-time mom with her growing handmade business.

“For anyone wanting to start a skill or craft, just jump in,” Allie shared. “Do it because you enjoy it and do it to glorify God. Then, watch Him put things into place exactly where they are meant to be.”

She lives by the beautiful truth of Colossians 3:23-24:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters…”

Pieces I Personally Love

I have one of Allie’s macramé pieces hanging in my home, and it is absolutely gorgeous. The quality and care in the design are impossible to miss. I’ve had multiple people ask where I got it from, and I love getting to tell them about The Homemade Mama and the story behind it. It’s more than just a wall hanging, it’s a piece of someone’s heart and a reminder that beauty often grows out of the most unexpected places.

I also have the cutest embroidered hat that she specially designed for me and this group. You definitely need one for yourself!
