Year in the Bible Week 5 Day 1 (29): Pure Gold

Read: Psalms 12-14

As I was reading Psalms today, a few verses really stood out to me. I try to highlight and take notes in my Bible while I read; sometimes I do that in the moment, and sometimes when I go back through later. One of my favorite things is opening my Bible and finding notes from a previous season and remembering what stood out to me then.

Remember, the word Psalm means song in Hebrew. These chapters are meant to be songs and poems of praise and prayer; used to get through good times and bad. All three of today’s Psalms were written by David.

Let me first point out that God is all-knowing.

“The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.” -Proverbs 15:3

God understands things far beyond what we ever could. When He sent His Son, He already knew the ending. Really though, it wasn’t an ending at all, it was a new beginning.

No words from God are wasted. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Everything in Scripture is there for a reason. There’s no fluff, no filler, no random moments. Like gold refined seven times, His Word is pure and true; everything unnecessary has been filtered out.

“The words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times.” -Psalm 12:6

Trusting God’s word and following His plan isn’t always easy. I have people in my life right now walking through really hard seasons. It’s natural to ask, “Why, God?” Unfortunately, we live in a broken world shaped by sin and free will. Bad things are going to happen, but God can use the bad for His, and also our, good!

“I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me.” -Psalm 13:5–6

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” -Romans 8:28

If you ever feel distant from God, it’s worth taking an honest look at your relationship with Him. If you were dating someone, you’d spend time together, talk, think about them, and tell others about them. Without those things, the relationship wouldn’t last. My husband and I worked hard to communicate and spend time together when we were dating. It wasn’t always easy, especially because I moved across the country. We made the long-distance work and eventually decided we didn’t want to be physically distant anymore. All of our relationship took time, energy, and effort; and it still does! Our relationship with God is the same in a sense. He is present with those who seek Him, those who spend time with Him, worship Him, and live for Him. If there’s room for you to grow there, lean into it and see how His presence becomes more apparent in your life. I am definitely hearing the Holy Spirit more as I work through these daily Bible verse studies and I am grateful for it.

“God is present in the company of the righteous.” -Psalm 14:5

Discussion Questions

  1. If someone on the outside looked at your daily life, what would they say you value most? Does that align with the relationship that you want with God?

A Note from the Author

Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.

The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me, what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture, and what the Holy Spirit is sharing through me. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.

This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.

Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.

Blessings,

Maria Wilcoxon
