Year in the Bible Week 6 Day 7 (42): Firm Foundation

Read: Isaiah 29-33

Chapter 32 is spoken directly to the people of Jerusalem. I want to understand it fully before I try to apply it, so I’ve been looking into the context and message behind it. I read three different breakdowns and studies on this chapter, and honestly, I still don’t feel qualified to speak confidently about it. There’s a lot there. I would really encourage you to dig into it yourself and sit with it. Pray over it and see what the Holy Spirit speaks to you or convicts you with.

In chapter 33, we see people in deep distress crying out to God. Honestly, I have been there. I have cried out to God in my weakest moments.

“Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress.” -Isaiah 33:2

Israel has truly been through it. Over and over again, through the generations, they return to sin and drift from God. That separation has consequences. Yet even in that cycle, we see something beautiful, they know that they need Him. They know that they are sinners, and they still ask for grace.

“The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with his justice and righteousness. He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure.” -Isaiah 33:5–6

What a great phrase: a sure foundation for your times. Like the man who built his house upon the rock. As a mom, life often feels chaotic. Toddlers melt down, babies cry, sleep is inconsistent … or nonexistent, and emotions run high. BUT GOD, but God is steady. He doesn’t fluctuate with my hormones, my exhaustion, or the stress of the day. He is the foundation.

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.” -Matthew 7:24-25

“Those who walk righteously and speak what is right, who reject gain from extortion and keep their hands from accepting bribes, who stop their ears against plots of murder and shut their eyes against contemplating evil— they are the ones who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress.” -Isaiah 33:15–16

There’s intention there. Guarding what you listen to. Guarding what you look at. Being mindful of how you live and speak. It reminds me of what we talked about reading Job 11–12 and even Luke 11. The choices that we make matter. What we allow into our hearts and minds either protects us or slowly pulls us away from a relationship with our Father.

As a mother, I think about this constantly. What am I modeling? What am I allowing in my home? What kind of foundation am I building for my children? Not in a perfectionist way, but in a purposeful way.

God has shown Israel immense grace throughout Scripture. Even when they wandered, He called them back. We see that same pattern in stories like Noah, Jonah, Abraham, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, Daniel in the lion’s den, Paul, and so many more. God is patient. He is just. He is merciful. He LOVES us. And He is still that same firm foundation for us today.

Discussion Questions

  1. In Isaiah 33:2, the people cry out, “Be our strength every morning.” What does it look like for you to rely on God daily, not just in crisis?
  2. Israel repeatedly drifted away from God, yet He continued to show them grace. Why do you think we are so prone to wander? What helps bring you back when you feel distant from God?

A Note from the Author

Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.

The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me, what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture, and what the Holy Spirit is sharing through me. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.

This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.

Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.

Blessings,

Maria Wilcoxon
