Year in the Bible Week 11 Day 7 (75): Spiritually Ready

Read: Mark 1-2

Today we start the book of Mark. For context, this book was written by John Mark. John Mark was a follower of Jesus, during the early days of the church after Jesus’ time on earth. In this book, we see red letters, words directly from Jesus. How awesome!

In chapter 1, Jesus announces the good news. We are called to change, be ready, and repent. Obviously, it is difficult to “be ready” because we never know when Jesus is coming back, but we do know that He is. Because of that, we should live in a way that honors Him. We have the Bible to follow, the commands, lessons, and teachings from the Lord. Would our lives honor God if He returned right now? Would you be ready?

“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” Mark 1:15

I have been watching the new Rush documentary show on Hulu. It’s cute and fun! I did not go through rush, especially not at a large southern school, but maybe some of you have and know firsthand what those girls go through. Before the recruitment process even begins, they register. Once they register, they are already being looked at through their resumes, their social media, their intro videos. This is all BEFORE rush even officially starts. Before bid day. Before it all really begins. They need to “be ready,” and some of them don’t even realize they should have been ready all along.

That really made me think; are we living like that spiritually? Are we ready now, or are we waiting for a moment that we think will come later … someday? But what if “someday” is literally today?!

Honestly, this has been on my mind in a very real, practical way too. I’ve been putting together a tornado bag for our family in case something happens quickly; things like provisions, a flashlight, toys for the kids, blankets, an umbrella, a cat carrier & food, fire starter, all the things we might need if we had to move fast and the worse was happening. You don’t wait until the storm is already here to prepare. You get ready ahead of time, even if you’re hoping that you never need it. A few years ago a devastating tornado hit wayyyy to close to home. Prayers and comfort for those still mourning or dealing with their own tragedy. Get ready, be ready, stay ready! I feel like that’s such a clear picture of what it means to be spiritually ready as well.

We know that the teachings of Jesus are just and true. God had a purpose in sending His Son, fully God and fully man, to live a sinless life. Jesus was tested just like we are, but He remained perfect and holy. He did not give in or fail, so that He could ultimately atone for our sins. Salvation is for everyone. Ready or not, Jesus wants us. However, He also calls us to be ready before it is too late.

“… Jesus … a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’” Mark 1:10–11

In chapter 2, we are reminded that Jesus came for those who need Him, which is all of us. We are all sinners!

“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mark 2:17

No matter where you are in your faith, no matter your past or your current struggles, Jesus is calling you. The question is, are you ready to answer? If you have already answered, are you ready to go now?

Discussion Question

  1. Do you feel spiritually ready if Jesus returned today? Why or why not?

A Note from the Author

Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.

The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me, what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture, and what the Holy Spirit is sharing through me. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.

This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.

Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.

Blessings,

Maria Wilcoxon
