Year in the Bible Week 13 Day 2 (83): Connected in HIStory

Read: Genesis 48-50

Today we finish the book of Genesis. Historically, this is the very beginning. The start of everything and the start of God’s relationship with His people, setting the foundation for the rest of the Bible.

In today’s chapters we see the deaths of both Jacob and Joseph. But even in death, we see God’s promises still standing. They are not gone; they are not forgotten. They are assured to be fulfilled in God’s timing. The Israelites will someday inherit the promised land.

In chapter 49, Jacob gives each of his sons a specific blessing. There are 12 sons, and they go on to become the 12 tribes of Israel (Twelve Tribes of Israel). When you look ahead in the Bible, you start to see how important that actually is. For example, Jesus comes from the tribe of Judah. And when you go back and read Judah’s blessing, it makes so much sense.

“Judah is a lion’s cub…” -Genesis 49:9

Then later in the Bible:

“Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed…” -Revelation 5:5

Lions symbolize kingship, strength, authority, power. From the very beginning, God was pointing to Jesus.

We also see tribes like Ephraim, which came from Joseph. That tribe was blessed to be fruitful, strong, and flourishing because of God’s hand on them. Later on, leaders like Joshua come from that line. Joshua is the one who leads the Israelites into the promised land after Moses (Joshua 1:1-6), even leading them to conquer Jericho (Joshua 6:1-20).

Moses, on the other hand, comes from the tribe of Levi. And what is interesting is that Levi does not receive land like the other tribes. Instead, they are set apart for responsibility and duty. They are given a different kind of inheritance, one that is centered around serving God.

When we look back, those stories also connect. Like Simeon and Levi. When their sister Dinah was violated, they responded in anger and took revenge, killing the men of the city (Genesis 34:25-29). Jacob later rebukes them for this, which is why they get no land.

“You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites…” -Genesis 34:30

In Genesis 49, we see that reflected again in their blessing. There are consequences. There is follow-through and nothing from God is random.

“Simeon and Levi … killed men in their anger … cursed be their anger … I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel.” -Genesis 49:5-7

Do you see how everything is connecting? It honestly feels like this could go on forever and we would still never catch every single connection or detail woven throughout the Bible. What is amazing is that God had all of this planned from the very beginning.

Look at how detail oriented He is! Truly. As a type A girl, I love that. Nothing is accidental. Nothing is overlooked. Every name, every tribe, every blessing, every story, it all points to something bigger. Scripture is not just a collection of random stories; it is one story: His.

And as a mom, this reminds me that God is just as intentional with our lives. Even when I cannot see how things are going to come together, He already knows. He is already working. The same God who mapped out generations and fulfilled promises over hundreds of years is the same God building and guiding my family right now. That gives me a lot of peace. His timing is the best!

A Note from the Author

Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.

The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me, what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture, and what the Holy Spirit is sharing through me. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.

This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.

Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.

Blessings,

Maria Wilcoxon
