Year in the Bible Week 14 Day 5 (95): True Wisdom

Read: Job 27-28

Job 27 really shows how Job refused to let go of his integrity. He stayed committed to living righteously, even while he was suffering, and it also reminds us that in the end, the way of the wicked leads nowhere.

In this chapter, Job gave his final word to his friends. He closed the conversation, ending the back and forth of who was right, who was wrong, and how the Lord judges. Job knows that God is just. Even though he was suffering, he still believed God would deal with him fairly.

“As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter, as long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils, my lips will not say anything wicked, and my tongue will not utter lies.” -Job 27:2-4

He recognized that even the breath he used to speak came from God. Because of that, he refused to lie. He refused to speak falsely just to satisfy his friends or try to make sense of his situation.

“I will never admit you are in the right; till I die, I will not deny my integrity. I will maintain my innocence and never let go of it; my conscience will not reproach me as long as I live.” -Job 27:5-6

Job stood firm. He knew that he lived righteously before the Lord, and he refused to let go of that truth, even while enduring suffering. And while we know the suffering was not coming from God but from the enemy, Job still chose to honor God in the middle of it.

He even turned the conversation back on his friends. They questioned his faith, but he challenged theirs. If they had truly experienced the goodness and power of God, why were they speaking in ways that misrepresented Him?

“I will teach you about the power of God; the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal.” -Job 27:11

Job refused to hide who God was and is, even when his circumstances were confusing. That kind of faith is steady.

Job 28 shifted the focus to wisdom. It reminds us that true wisdom is not something we can earn, find, or figure out on our own. It is far more valuable than anything that this world has to offer.

Job didn’t understand what was happening or why it was happening. His friends tried to explain it, but their explanations were incorrect and painted Job in a false light. Job knew he has been faithful and lived righteously. Even without all the answers, Job fell back on what he did know.

“… ‘The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.’” -Job 28:28

He may not have understood the parameters of his situation, but he knew this: fearing the Lord is enough. Turning away from evil is enough. That is wisdom!

There is something so incredible in that. We don’t always get explanations. We don’t always understand what God is doing. But we can still choose to fear Him, to trust Him, and to walk in obedience. That is where true wisdom is found.

Discussion Questions

  1. What does it look like for you to hold onto integrity even when life feels unfair?
  2. Are there areas where you are tempted to believe false narratives instead of what you know to be true about God?

A Note from the Author

Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.

The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me, what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture, and what the Holy Spirit is sharing through me. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.

This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.

Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.

Blessings,

Maria Wilcoxon
