Year in the Bible Week 1 Day 1 (1): Created for Relationship with God

Read: Genesis 1-3

From the very beginning, God’s desire has been relationship. Genesis 1–3 shows us this clearly. God works with intention. He shows us His love for Adam and Eve by speaking to them, providing for them, and walking with them in the Garden. He isn’t a distant God; He is present and personal.

Let’s be honest here, reading Genesis can feel boring and repetitive. The long histories and details can feel mundane. But God doesn’t waste words. Genesis is the beginning, full of promise, hope, and purpose. Like the early days with a newborn: exhausting, repetitive, and blurry, yet incredibly meaningful. Every moment matters, even when it may not feel exciting.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful…” -2 Timothy 3:16

Looking at the beginning of Genesis, it makes me think of this: God knew Adam and Eve would sin. He knew they would eat from the tree. Yet He created them anyway. That tells us something powerful about His love. Love always involves sacrifice. You may disagree; however, in my 5 years of marriage, 3 years as a mother, 29 years as a daughter, and many years as a friend, I can say this is true. When you love someone, you sacrifice for them. Looking at the first three books of Genesis, we see that even after sin entered the world, God pursued His people by covering their shame, and promising redemption.

And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them. -Genesis 3:21

But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. -Romans 5:8

Eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil did not make humans like God. It gave them awareness of right and wrong and the responsibility to choose obedience. Faith is not blind obedience without choice. Faith is trusting God even when we could choose otherwise

Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see. -Hebrews 11:1

Genesis reminds us that we were created not just to exist, but to walk closely with God and build on the relationship that He has never stopped pursuing.

Discussion Question

As a mom, why is relationship more important than just obedience?

How does that help you better understand God’s heart for us?

A Note from the Author

Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.

The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me and what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.

This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.

Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.

Blessings,

Maria Wilcoxon
