Read: Psalms 48-50
Today’s reading is Psalms 48 through 50, and these chapters remind us who God is, what truly matters, and how He sees the heart. My husband and I read and discussed these chapters together. It is so nice sometimes to have someone to read and discuss with. Whether that’s a friend, spouse, family member, or even reading aloud to your pet. Be grateful for those around you!
Psalm 48 opens with praise and the greatness of God.
“Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, His holy mountain.” -Psalm 48:1
The city being spoken of is Jerusalem, the place where God’s people gathered and worshiped Him. Psalm 48:2 uses the Hebrew word Zaphon, which can simply mean north or the far north in a geographic sense, but it is also the name of a mountain that was considered sacred in Canaanite religion and believed to be the dwelling place of false gods. The psalm makes it clear that the true God is above every false god and every earthly power.
Psalm 49 then shifts and reminds us that riches mean nothing in eternity. Money, status, houses, and possessions cannot save us, and none of it comes with us when we die.
“For they can take nothing with them when they die, their splendor will not descend with them.” -Psalm 49:17
This reminded me of something my pastor said at church today. When we get to heaven, it will not be a place where people boast and say they deserve to be there because of what they did, how successful they were, or how blessed they seemed in this life. It will be gratitude and humility, knowing that Jesus paid it all and made a way. When people are separated from God, and end up in Hell, there will not be confusion or excuses about why. Sin will be fully known for what it is. That is why we cannot put our hope in wealth, status, or earthly things, because none of it can save us. Only a real relationship with God can.
This world teaches us to chase wealth and appearance, but Scripture teaches us to chase God. We do not enter heaven because of success, popularity, or material blessings. We enter by the grace of Jesus Christ and mercy of God. That should produce gratitude, not pride. Psalm 50 reminds us that God sees everything and He will judge rightly.
“Our God comes and will not be silent…” -Psalm 50:3
“Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.” -Psalm 50:15
God is not fooled by empty religion or fake faith. We cannot live one way privately and put on a performance publicly. He sees past appearances, cross necklaces, social media posts, Sunday best, and into the true posture of our hearts. Real faith is not waiting until the last second to say the right words and “repent.” It is a life of repentance, relationship, surrender, and trust in Him now. NOW! None of us know when our last day will be, which is why today matters.

A Note from the Author
Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.
The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me, what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture, and what the Holy Spirit is sharing through me. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.
This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.
Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.
Blessings,
Maria Wilcoxon
