A Great Place to Explore With Kids

One of my favorite things about Blacklick Woods is that it doesn’t feel like you have to plan a complicated day for your kids to have fun. There are so many opportunities for them to simply explore, touch, climb, and discover things on their own. As a mom, I’m always looking for places where my kids can burn off some energy while also learning something, and this was definitely one of those places.

We started our visit at the canopy walk, which was probably one of the biggest highlights for the kids. There were rope features and different exploratory elements that kept them moving and curious. My kids had such a great time, and I loved watching them actually engage with their surroundings.

The Canopy Walk

The canopy walk itself is such a neat experience because you get to see the woods from a completely different perspective. Even with little ones, it felt like something we could enjoy together rather than an activity that was only geared toward older kids.

One thing I really appreciated was the elevator that provides accessibility to the canopy walk. That makes the experience more accessible for families who may not be able to use stairs, and it’s something I always like to point out when visiting places with kids because accessibility can make such a difference.

Don’t Skip the Indoor Area

After spending time outside, we headed inside to explore the nature center. There were animals and hands-on, educational things for the kids to see, and my little ones were fascinated by everything. The kids were able to see animals up close and explore different displays, and it was one of those places where they could learn without realizing they were learning.

I love when a place has a good mix of indoor and outdoor activities because, let’s be honest, Ohio weather doesn’t always cooperate with our plans. Having an indoor area gives families another option and makes it easier to spend more time at the metro park without worrying about the weather as much.

Perfect for a Picnic

We also packed a picnic and spent some time enjoying lunch together. Going with friends made the whole experience even better. Sometimes as a mom, I think the simplest outings end up being the best ones. You don’t need an elaborate itinerary. Give the kids somewhere interesting to explore, pack some food, bring people you enjoy being around, and let the day unfold.

Stroller and Bike Friendly

Another thing I appreciated was how accessible the park felt for families with young children. There are paved trails that make it easy to bring a stroller or bike, which is especially helpful when you’re visiting with little ones who aren’t going to walk the entire time. If you’re a parent who wants to get outside but doesn’t want to commit to a difficult hike with your kids, this is a great option. You can enjoy the trails without needing to worry about navigating a rugged path with a stroller.

A Fun Day Without Spending a Fortune

One of the best parts? Blacklick Woods Metro Park is free to visit.

Free family activities are always a win in my book, especially when you can spend several hours there and the kids don’t run out of things to do. Between the trails, canopy walk, nature center, picnic areas, and all of the opportunities for kids to explore, there is plenty to make a full day out of your visit.

Final Thoughts

As a mom, I really loved how much there was for my kids to do without the experience feeling overwhelming. They were able to run, climb, explore, see animals, learn about nature, and just enjoy being outside. It was also one of those outings where the adults actually had a good time too. We weren’t constantly trying to keep the kids entertained because the park gave them so many things to discover on their own.

If you’re looking for a free, family-friendly place to spend a few hours outdoors in Central Ohio, I definitely recommend putting Blacklick Woods Metro Park on your list. Whether you have toddlers, bigger kids, or a mix of ages, there’s plenty to explore.

Plan Your Visit

Pack a picnic, bring the stroller or bikes, and give yourself plenty of time to explore. If your kids love animals, climbing, and hands-on activities, they’ll probably have just as much fun as ours did.

Have you been to Blacklick Woods Metro Park? I’d love to know what your family’s favorite part was! And if you haven’t been yet, save this for your next family adventure around Central Ohio.
