How Bluebonnet Naturals Began

I always love hearing the story behind a small business, especially when it starts with something as simple as a mom wanting better options for her own family. Same here mama! Bluebonnet Naturals began with homemade toothpaste after Brittany McNeil and her family became more aware of the ingredients found in everyday products.

When their six-year-old son was born, they started taking a closer look at the things that they were putting on and in their bodies. That eventually led Brittany to start replacing household and personal care products with things that she could make herself.

The very first product she made was toothpaste. She bought ingredients in bulk and ended up spending about $600 getting started. Her husband jokingly asked, “I thought this was supposed to save us money?” So, Brittany decided to take some of the toothpaste to a local farmers market. She completely sold out. How wonderful! Just like that, what started as an effort to make products that her family felt comfortable using turned into the foundation of Bluebonnet Naturals.

Why Bluebonnet Naturals?

The name is a nod to where Brittany and her family are from: Texas. Texans tend to have a pretty strong sense of pride in their state, and the bluebonnet is such a recognizable symbol of Texas. They wanted a name that reflected that connection to home while also communicating what they make, which is why “Naturals” was the perfect addition.

My Experience With Bluebonnet Naturals

I was able to try several Bluebonnet Naturals products myself, and one of my favorites has been their magnesium deodorant. As a breastfeeding mama, finding personal care products that I feel comfortable using is something I’m especially intentional about. I love being able to reach for a natural deodorant that fits into that routine, and this one has quickly become a favorite for me.

I also received their chapstick, lotion, and remineralizing fluoride-free toothpaste, which gave me a fun little introduction to the variety of products they make. I love that this is a business where I can find everyday personal care products as well as more specialty items all in one place.

More Than Just Toothpaste

Although toothpaste is where Bluebonnet Naturals started, they’ve grown quite a bit since that first farmers market. Today, this small family-run business makes a wide range of natural self-care and body care products. Their offerings include lip balm, deodorant, toothpaste, tallow-based skincare, baby butt paste, sunscreen, and nipple cream specifically made with breastfeeding mothers in mind.

They also make a honey and lanolin cream, eczema support creams, and specialty products created based on customer requests. They’ve even developed targeted topical products for muscle, joint, nerve, and scalp support.

What I think is especially interesting is how much of their product line has developed through conversations with people in their own church and community. Customers have come to them with specific concerns and asked if they could create something that might provide comfort or support.

A Small Business Rooted in Community

Bluebonnet Naturals is located in a very small Southeast Texas town with fewer than 900 people. They currently serve several local mom-and-pop shops and continue to grow largely through word of mouth and the support of their community.

I think there’s something really special about a business growing that way. Instead of starting with a huge operation or massive marketing campaign, Bluebonnet Naturals has grown because people in their community tried their products, liked them, and told other people about them. They also use locally sourced ingredients whenever possible and organic materials whenever they can.

Faith Is at the Center

Faith isn’t something Bluebonnet Naturals simply adds to their branding. It’s at the center of what they do. Brittany and her family believe that God has provided natural resources for us to use and that we have a responsibility to steward our bodies and those resources wisely. They pray over the products they make and include Scripture on their labels.

I really appreciate the heart behind that. Their goal isn’t simply to make and sell natural products. They want to love people well, serve their community, and glorify God through the work they’re doing.

From One Homemade Product to a Growing Business

I think the story of Bluebonnet Naturals is such a good reminder of how many small businesses actually begin. It wasn’t a giant business plan or some elaborate idea. It was a family looking at the products they were using, deciding they wanted something different, and a mom making toothpaste in her kitchen. Then she took that toothpaste to a farmers’ market and sold out. Now, that one product has grown into an entire line of natural personal care and skincare products serving families both locally and beyond.

Final Thoughts

I love finding small businesses that I can actually see fitting into my everyday life, and Bluebonnet Naturals definitely falls into that category. The magnesium deodorant has been a favorite of mine, especially during this season of breastfeeding, and I also enjoyed getting to try their chapstick, lotion, and remineralizing fluoride-free toothpaste.

Beyond the products themselves, I love knowing the story behind the business. Bluebonnet Naturals was created by a family who wanted better options for their own home and then decided to share those options with other families. It’s family-run, faith-centered, rooted in community, and focused on making simple, natural products for everyday life. That’s exactly the kind of small business I love introducing to the Cx3 Moms community.
