Read: Job 33-34
In today’s reading we continue hearing from Elihu as he speaks to Job and Job’s friends. Elihu had stayed quiet for a long time because he was younger and assumed the older men would have more wisdom. He spoke because age does not automatically equal understanding, and sometimes truth still needs to be spoken no matter who says it.
In chapter 33, Elihu pointed back to God as Creator.
“The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” -Job 33:4
This is a reminder that God made each of us and gave each of us life. None of us are self-made, and every breath we take is because of Him. Elihu then humbled himself before Job and said that they are the same before God.
“I am the same as you in God’s sight; I too am a piece of clay.” -Job 33:6
We see this imagery throughout Scripture. We are the clay, and God is the potter, the one who shapes, molds, corrects, and forms us according to His will.
“Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” -Isaiah 64:8
Toward the end of chapter 33, Elihu spoke about mercy and rescue.
“I have sinned, I have perverted what is right, but I did not get what I deserved. God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.” -Job 33:27–28
The pit points to destruction and death –Hell. We all deserve judgment because of sin, yet God is merciful and provides rescue. Ultimately, that rescue is fully seen through Jesus.
Then in chapter 34, Elihu called the others to listen and discern truth together.
“Hear my words, you wise men; listen to me, you men of learning. For the ear tests words as the tongue tastes food. Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn together what is good.” -Job 34:2–4
I love that picture. Just as the tongue tastes new food, we should test words carefully and seek wisdom. No one knows everything, and we should always be willing to keep learning what is good and true. Elihu also reminds them that God is perfectly just.
“It is unthinkable that God would do wrong, that the Almighty would pervert justice.” -Job 34:12
God does not confuse right and wrong, and He does not judge unfairly. He is holy, righteous, and perfect in all His ways. When we question His justice, we need to remember that His wisdom is higher than ours. Today’s reading reminds us that God made us, God shapes us, God rescues us, and God judges rightly!

A Note from the Author
Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.
The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me, what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture, and what the Holy Spirit is sharing through me. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.
This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.
Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.
Blessings,
Maria Wilcoxon
