Year in the Bible Week 20 Day 7 (140): Authority

Read: Luke 3-4

Today’s reading is Luke chapters 3 and 4. Luke wrote this Gospel to provide an orderly account of everything that happened. Right at the beginning of Luke, he explains why he is writing:

“So that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” -Luke 1:4

Luke wanted people to know with certainty the truth about Jesus, and throughout these chapters we continue seeing prophecy fulfilled and the authority of Christ on full display.

In chapter 3 we see a repetition of what was written in the book of Isaiah regarding preparing the way for the Lord. We also see the genealogy of Jesus traced all the way back to Adam. Before the genealogy begins, we read:

“And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’” -Luke 3:22

We know here clearly that Jesus is the Son of God, though people believed Him to be the son of Joseph. The genealogy then traces His earthly lineage all the way back through generations to Adam. This also connects to Old Testament prophecy regarding the coming Messiah.

We see prophecy pointing to Jesus throughout Scripture, including:
• Genesis 49:10
• Jeremiah 23:5–6
• Isaiah 11:1
• Matthew 1:1–17

The Bible is so interconnected, and it’s incredible seeing how God’s promises unfold across generations and timelines.

Then in chapter 4 we see Jesus being tempted, or tested, by the devil in the wilderness. The Greek word used here can mean both “tempted” and “tested.” Even in physical weakness after fasting, Jesus responds to every temptation with Scripture.

“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone.’” -Luke 4:4

This points back to Deuteronomy 8:3.

Then again:

“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” -Luke 4:8

Referencing Deuteronomy 6:13.

And again:

“Jesus answered, ‘It is said: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” -Luke 4:12

Referencing Deuteronomy 6:16.

One lesson that really stood out to me here is how Jesus fought temptation with Scripture. He did not argue emotionally. He did not compromise. He responded with the truth of God’s Word every single time.

That’s such an important reminder for us too. When we face temptation, fear, spiritual attacks, lies from the enemy, or even pressure from the world around us, Scripture is a weapon, a tool. God’s Word carries authority and power.

As mothers especially, this matters so much because our children are watching how we respond to fear, pressure, frustration, temptation, and difficult seasons. Are we responding with panic and emotion alone, or are we grounding ourselves in God’s truth? Even speaking Scripture over our homes, our children, and ourselves matters.

Later in chapter 4 we see Jesus teaching and performing miracles, and people are amazed by Him.

“They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.” -Luke 4:32

Jesus spoke with authority because He is the Son of God. His words carried power then, and they still carry power now. When we pray in Jesus’ name, rebuke lies in Jesus’ name, or speak truth in Jesus’ name, there is power in that because of who He is.

Even after being rejected at Nazareth, Jesus continued His mission faithfully.

“But he said, ‘I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.’” -Luke 4:43

And verse 44 continues:

“And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.” -Luke 4:44

Despite rejection, opposition, and temptation, Jesus continued walking in obedience and fulfilling the purpose He was sent for. That is such a powerful example of perseverance, obedience, and unwavering trust in God’s calling.

Discussion Questions

  1. What stood out to you most about Jesus responding to temptation with Scripture?
  2. How can we better use God’s Word when facing fear, temptation, or pressure? Find a specific verse, write it down, and write down what scenario or situation you could use it for.

A Note from the Author

Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.

The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me, what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture, and what the Holy Spirit is sharing through me. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.

This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.

Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.

Blessings,

Maria Wilcoxon
