Year in the Bible Week 19 Day 2 (128): Equally Yoked

Read: 2 Corinthians 6-8

This mama is tired, tired, tired today, so we are keeping this one a little shorter and sweeter. Today’s reading is 2 Corinthians chapters 6 through 8. In chapter 6 we see the very well-known reminder:

“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.” -2 Corinthians 6:14

And honestly, this applies to friendships too, but especially in dating, engagement, and marriage. Being equally yoked matters so much because your faith impacts every part of your life, your values, your decisions, your future, and especially how you raise children if you plan to have them someday. It is really hard to walk closely with God when the person walking beside you is pulling in a completely different direction. And if you are already married to someone you are unequally yoked with, that does not mean it is too late for your marriage or your family. You cannot force someone to change or force them into relationship with God, but you can pray for them faithfully, love them well, and be an example of Christ through the way that you live, speak, forgive, and carry yourself.

Paul is writing to the church in Corinth here. Throughout chapter 6, Paul keeps saying “as God has said” because he is pointing back to truths God had already spoken throughout the Old Testament. In verse 16 we read:

“I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” -2 Corinthians 6:16

Which also connects to Leviticus 26:12, Jeremiah 32:38, and Ezekiel 37:27. Then in verse 17:

“Therefore, ‘Come out from them and be separate … Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.’” -2 Corinthians 6:17

Which points back to Isaiah 52:11 and Ezekiel 20:34, 41. And then verse 18 says:

“And, ‘I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters,’ says the Lord Almighty.” -2 Corinthians 6:18

Which connects back to 2 Samuel 7:8, 14.

I love seeing how connected Scripture is. God keeps repeating these truths throughout the Bible because He wants relationship with His people. He wants us close to Him, walking with Him, trusting Him, and not constantly getting lost in worldly things that pull our hearts away from Him.

In chapter 7, Paul is genuinely overjoyed because the church in Corinth actually repented and turned back toward God. Not just feeling bad, but truly changing direction. Then in chapter 8 we read about the grace God gives His people and the encouragement to open their hearts fully to the Lord and to one another.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think that God repeats the same truths throughout Scripture?

A Note from the Author

Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.

The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me, what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture, and what the Holy Spirit is sharing through me. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.

This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.

Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.

Blessings,

Maria Wilcoxon
