Year in the Bible Week 20 Day 4 (137): Joy and Love

Read: Psalms 57-59

In today’s reading two things really stood out to me. But I also read most of today’s reading aloud to my three-year-old and then asked him what stood out to him. I skipped over a few parts here and there while reading it to him to keep it age appropriate. The answer he gave me was really interesting.

“Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge.” -Psalm 57:1

God is our safe place. He is our refuge and our shelter when life feels overwhelming. He is our Ark when the flood waters are rising around us. Whatever we are going through, whether that is grief, anxiety, heartbreak, stress, fear, or uncertainty, we can run to Him. We know that in Him we have safety, security, peace, and eternity.

“You are my strength, I watch for you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely.” -Psalm 59:9

We know that God is true to His word. He keeps His promises and we can rely on Him. My pastor always says we can “take that to the bank” because God does not go back on His word. That check is always good and will never bounce. God can be strong for us when we cannot be strong for ourselves, and He can protect us when we cannot protect ourselves.

Then after I finished reading, I asked my toddler what stood out to him and he said, “the whole thing was joyful.” I just thought that was so interesting because David was praising God during a time that was not actually joyful at all. David was hurting and struggling, but he was still choosing to praise God and look toward Him instead of only focusing on the hard things around him. Then my toddler said that love stood out to him because “we should love everyone.”

“But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.” -Psalm 59:16

We know God loves us because He sent Jesus for us and wants a relationship with us. We can love Him in return because that relationship is what He desires from us. Even if you feel like you do not have many people in your life that love you or want to be around you, know that God always does! His love is constant, steady, and unchanging.

Discussion Questions

  1. What does God’s constant love mean to you personally?
  2. What does it mean to take refuge in God?
  3. How have you seen God be your strength in difficult seasons? Think of one or more specific examples.
  4. What can we learn from a child noticing joy and love in these Psalms?

A Note from the Author

Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.

The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me, what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture, and what the Holy Spirit is sharing through me. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.

This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.

Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.

Blessings,

Maria Wilcoxon
