Year in the Bible Week 20 Day 5 (138): Unworthy

Read: Job 39-40

In today’s reading, we are nearing the very end of the book of Job. The Lord continued speaking to Job and questioning him, reminding Job of just how powerful, sovereign, and all knowing He is. God asked question after question about creation, the animals, nature, strength, and power, basically showing Job that human understanding is so limited compared to the wisdom of God. Then in chapter 40 the Lord said,

“Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!” -Job 40:2

God was reminding Job that He is still God even when humans do not fully understand what He is doing. We are not above Him. We are not wiser than Him. We cannot see the full picture the way that He can. Job then responded to the Lord in humility.

“I am unworthy—how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth.” -Job 40:4

That verse really stood out to me because we know that we are unworthy. I am unworthy. We are sinful people and yet God still wants a relationship with us. I am sinful! He still loves us. I am loved. He sent Jesus to die for our sins so that we could have eternity with Him in heaven one day. We did not deserve that kind of love and mercy, but He gives it to us anyway because He is a loving Father.

I think sometimes people struggle with understanding God’s love because maybe they did not have an earthly father who loved them well or showed up for them consistently. But even if that is your story, you still have a heavenly Father who loves you perfectly. He hears you, sees you, forgives you, guides you, and wants a relationship with you. That is such a beautiful thing that should be celebrated, respected, and remembered.

One thing I took seriously when choosing my husband was knowing that I was also choosing a father for my children. Obviously, none of us are perfect and no man will ever compare to God, but I wanted someone who loved the Lord, valued family, showed leadership, and had a heart that desired what was good and godly. Some of you are already married or have already built your families and this is not meant to bring guilt or shame at all, but for those still choosing a future spouse, it is important to really think about the kind of father someone may become. Do they lead with love? Do they have humility? Do they desire the things of God?

As mothers, wives, and parents, we shape so much of our children’s understanding of love, leadership, forgiveness, and faith. Ultimately, our goal should always be to point them toward the perfect love of our heavenly Father.

Discussion Questions

  1. What do Job chapters 39–40 teach us about the power of God?
  2. Why is humility important in our relationship with the Lord?
  3. What qualities make someone a godly leader in a family? Find at least one Bible verse to support your answer.

A Note from the Author

Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about the Bible verse studies, devotionals, and prayers that I put together. While I strive to offer meaningful insights and reflections, it’s important to clarify that I am not a trained or licensed biblical professional. My goal is not to provide expert theological advice but to share my personal knowledge, beliefs, and experiences as I read and reflect on the Holy Bible.

The insights I offer come from my own understanding and spiritual journey. I approach these reflections with the intention of sharing what personally resonates with me, what I’ve learned through my own study of Scripture, and what the Holy Spirit is sharing through me. I hope these thoughts are helpful and encouraging, but they are based on my personal perspective rather than formal theological training.

This specific Bible study is based off the book A Beautiful Year in the Bible The 52-Week Bible Study for Women by a series of wonderful authors Copyrighted by Alabaster Creative Inc. I do not own the rights to this book and am not claiming to. I am using the book to create my own version of the Bible in 365 days and continue to direct God’s word towards women, more specifically mothers.

Thank you for your understanding and for joining me in this journey of faith and reflection.

Blessings,

Maria Wilcoxon
